Blog#6: TED talk summary

        I chose number two Shereen El Feki: Pop culture in the Arab world. She tells us that people are busy learning Western innovations and changing them into things in the Arab region. There are two prime examples of this sort of Islamic cross-cultural hybridization. One is 4Shbab, which means "for youth", and it's a new Arab TV channel. It's different from the old music channels, showing a kinder, gentler face of Islam and inspiring young people to bravely face challenges and difficulties. The other one is "The 99". The characters are meant to embody the 99 attributes of Allah such as justice, wisdom, and so on. 
        I am very interested in Fulla which is the Arab world's answer to Barbie. It's my first time to know, and it makes me surprised. I think Fulla is a great symbol of cultural mishmash because she has both studied Western popular culture and retained her own identity. She is not a copy, she really belongs to Arab popular culture. I also like "The 99". I think it plays an important social and cultural role in the Arab region. It not only provides entertainment for people but also conveys good social views to young people.

Blog#3: The reflection of Unit 1

I have gained a lot of knowledge through learning about culture and cultural identity. If use a very short phrase to express the essence of this unit, I will choose Hot Pot. Hot pot is like a multicultural world, different cultures are like different food. All food can be cooked alone in the pot, and can also be cooked together, but each food is unique and will not be replaced. I learn about culture through reading, watching videos, taking classes, and group discussions. One of the fastest ways for me to learn is to connect with people from different cultures and backgrounds. I am glad that there are so many different cultures in our class, including Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Mexican, Colombian, Turkish, and so on.       Westerns were popular between 1930 and 1960. It is usually set in the American Old West in the 19th century. Here are three keywords about it. The first was the Cowboys. The main character in Western movies is usually a rugged, strong cowboy who is good at using guns and riding horses. The second is Frontier. Westerns are usually set in the vast landscapes of the American Frontier, such as deserts, border towns, ranches, and the Wild West. The third is justice. It is a recurring theme in Westerns. It makes a clear distinction between good and evil. Good cowboys stand for justice and often risk their lives to protect others. Edwin S. Porter, known as 'the father of the story film', was a famous director of the American Western. The Good the Bad and the Ugly Western was made by Sergio Leone in 1966.
