Blog#13: Unit 3 Reflection

In the last unit, I learned about famous films and stars from the 1960s to now. In this unit, we continued to study the studios, genre, industry, and history of films in depth. The film is at the intersection of art, industry, technology, and politics. If use a word to express the essence of unit 3, I would choose mirror because a movie is like a mirror reflecting the Mainstream culture, social issues, and political environment of the society at that time, and it will also reflect the fashion and trend in the future. My "aha" moment was when we were studying Tyler Perry's movies and talking about Hollywood movies. I was surprised to find that movies can create a shared cultural experience. Even if we come from different backgrounds and cultures, movies can connect us. We can find common ground in our cultures through movies and bridge the gap. I don't know why Tyler Perry's movies are so successful and what formulaic movies are. Before that, I always thought movies only brought entertainment value to people. His films often delve into the struggles and successes of ordinary people, providing a platform for stories that don't stand out in Hollywood or mainstream film. And he worked to solve and highlight problems within the African-American community, creating a connection with the audience. I think his movies are successful because he is really done movies like Mirrors. In today's fast-paced world, technology, and social media dominate our lives, and pop culture and movies have become more accessible than ever before. However, the film is an illusion that is carefully crafted by people who want to show a particular point of view, so some of the groups or individuals in a film may be inaccurate, stereotyped, or lacking in diversity. We should critically look at everything reflected in the film.
